After the great experience of Cookie Cult I was much more open to giving non-traditional coffee places a try; but Gumblossom didn’t just fit that bill – it almost matched the other venue in that it specialised in bakes and more specifically – cookies.
But unlike Cookie Cult, the interior very much resembled a bakery: minimalistic, with no seating available, so this was definitely going to be a take-away. I was prepared for it also, as Gumblossom was another place recommended by my work colleague Matthew – in fact, this was his first choice and he sounded pretty smitten by it, so I did have high hopes for this one.

Those were dampened when upon placing my order I saw the barista pour the espresso first, before the milk was ready – a big no-no in my book. I was still giving her the benefit of the doubt as I admired the cookie display – there were quite a few creative options to choose from, but I refrained (even if the mini stroopwafel was calling to me).
Interestingly, it looked like the barista poured the cocoa into the milk jug and steamed them together, which should produce a smooth chocolatey concoction, but also indicated they were using powder rather than melted chocolate. In any case, it was a perfect pour right to the rim and I almost requested the lid would be kept off, but since the drink had to be transferred from the back counter, I did not want to create a spill hazard, so I kept my silence, paid and left.

Having found a spot across the road to lay down the cup and do the taste test, my first observation was that there was quite a thick foam on top, now that the drink had settled. It was just of drinking temperature (understandable for a take-away) but that didn’t hide one obvious sensation: it was pretty sweet. Not like a Cadbury’s chocolate, but not far off either. As it cooled, it actually reminded me more of white chocolate, and had tinges of honey tones in it. It definitely had a nice texture but the sweetness overpowered any caffeine flavours.
Rosemount is a lovely part of Aberdeen, eclectic in a way, with all the independent businesses and relaxed community feel; no wonder then that it offers quite an abundance of cafes to explore and enjoy. In the case of Gumblossom, it’s a destination for a sweet treat; but if you’re looking for a great coffee experience, there are better options around!

Verdict justification
More of a luxurious and sweet chocolate than a mocha – and no redeeming features throughout this take-away only experience
