One summer’s day, I was planning to go for a drive (and maybe a short walk to justify the mileage). Reason being: I had bought a new car and was eager to take it out for a spin.
More than that: I wanted to take some photos of it with pretty backdrops, while it was all shiny and pristine. After some deliberation and checking the forecast, I settled for the north, specifically: Gardenstown and Crovie.
Not much had changed since my last visit in terms of the cafe scene, so after successfully making my way down the tiny roads to the harbour and then back up again after completing a brisk circular hike, I set the GPS for a new destination nearby – Pennan.
Another tight, winding road took me to the quaint village, so small that even though the Coastal Cuppie was not where it had been marked on the map, it didn’t take me long to walk the length of the harbour to find it at its Eastern end.
I didn’t let the sight of a wooden shack put me off – we’ve seen worse on this site after all! – but I was a bit concerned when I couldn’t spot a coffee machine inside… coffee was advertised, however, and so I ordered my usual, with a piece of raspberry and peach yogurt cake – I was more than ready for it at that point.

Interestingly, the smiley server asked if I wanted my brew to be “stronger on the coffee side or not so much”? I asked for the former, not wishing to end up with a hot chocolate.
There was no milk steaming involved in the preparation, and there was none to be seen either when I was picking up my wee goodie tray that doubled up as a plate (quite neat considering the outdoor setup). I guessed that the mocha was made by combining coffee with cocoa; and whether I was right or wrong, one thing’s for sure: it was hugely enjoyable!

Somehow, this simple concoction had the right balance of coffee and sweetness and was not lacking in anything on the taste. I eagerly finished it way too quickly (followed right after by the scrumptious cake).
I have to say, considering the remote and isolated setting and the less-than-favourable seaside conditions, I found the Cuppie to be a revelation, so uncommon in places where there are few venues to choose from. If you’re in this part of the world – and it is worth a visit for the gorgeous views all around – make sure to grab yourself a cuppa!
